Earlier help, before things reach crisis point

2 September 2026

Proposals to identify and support needs sooner — in early years and primary, without waiting for a diagnosis.

One theme running through the reforms is catching needs earlier: in early years settings and primary school, rather than waiting until a child is struggling badly, out of school, or waiting years for a diagnosis.

The proposals include more support for speech, language and communication, and for neurodiversity, that a child can get without a formal diagnosis or an EHCP first — support tied to need, not to a label.

This is a proposal, not law yet. But it matches what a lot of Rivercrest families have told us they want: help that does not depend on winning an argument first.
